    Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1) is an enveloped, positive-sense RNA virus known for causing acquire immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Mature HIV-1 virions have a distinctive appearance by electron microscopy with a characteristic cone-shaped core which encases the viral RNA and replication proteins. Depicted in this painting is a binucleated T cell surrounded by mature and immature HIV-1 virions and other cellular debris.
