Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus known to cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This viral protease is involved in the cleaving of newly synthesized polyproteins to create the mature protein components of an HIV-1 virion. Because HIV-1 protease is critical in the infectious cycle of the virus, it is typically a target of antiretroviral therapy.
